Avandia Recall & Cardio vascular Side Effects
There is overwhelming evidence that the drug has been associated with a large number of serious cases of cardiovascular problems. Medical experts opine that over 100,000 heart attacks (some of them leading to deaths) are associated with Avandia use since its launch in 1999 by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). They insist on Avandia recall before it hurts many more.

Admission of Avandia Side Effects but No Avandia Recall!
The first sign of serious side effects was admitted by GSK in February 2007 when they put out warning that women users could face risk of bone fractures, especially in the limbs. Meanwhile, in November 2008, the consumer group Citizen Watchdog released its finding that the drug was closely linked to failure of liver, increased risks of heart attack as well as heart failure, loss of vision and anemia. It also confirmed the GSK warning about bone fractures. The group urged the FDA to immediately ban the drug because of “multiple, serious risks.” Of course, GSK denied the side effects and did not take any action for Avandia recall.
Avandia Side Effects Catches the Eyes in Other Countries-Avandia Recall in Europe
In June 2010, a research paper in The New England Journal of Medicine revealed that use of Avandia increased the chances of heart attacks by 43 percent and that of death by cardiovascular diseases by a whopping 64 percent. This and other revelations led the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to ban the sale of this drug in whole of Europe, especially because the Agency “could not identify additional measures that would reduce the cardiovascular risk”. GSK announced Avandia recall from the United Kingdom and other European countries effective from 21 October 2010. Avandia recall in Europe was indeed a big blow to the reputation of the drug as well as that of the manufacturer, GSK.
Around the same time USFDA also ordered that the use of Avandia be restricted because “of data that linked the drug to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular problems”. Medsafe, the New Zealand medication regulatory authority has also faulted Avandia for side effects.
User Awareness – Avandia Lawsuits
Many patients who had suffered Avandia side effects have opted to file Avandia lawsuits against the manufacturer for not adequately disclosing possible side effects. Understandably, GSK refuted the allegations and is not considering Avandia recall. It is equally noteworthy that GSK has agreed to settle a number of Avandia lawsuits in the first phase and paid out as much as $ 4670 million. By This year beginning, the manufacturer had agreed to settle further $250 million; looking ahead, the company is setting aside $3.4 billion as legal charges during the fourth quarter of 2011. As stated, the payments already agreed upon are settlements and not court awards. It is for the reader to decide upon the importance of making settlements BEFORE the trial begins. Perhaps, the company prefers this to Avandia recall.
